BURTON STREET PLAZA AND BLIGH STREET REFURBISHMENT
Following community consultation, Umbaco was engaged to finalise the concepts and prepare the detail documentation for the refurbishment of the streetscape of one of the buzzing village centres at the heart of Kirribilli. Two streets were reclaimed and while Bligh Street was pedestrianised, Burton Street was transformed into a Village Plaza.
The levels for both streets were rationalised and new pedestrian paving with patterns was installed. The pedestrian zone of Burton Plaza is lined with generous sandstone seating terraces to support outdoor dining while also providing additional public seating. Robust materials were used with reference to the site’s history. A new planted area delineates the boundary of the pedestrian zone from the main street. A sculpture made in homage of a local shoemaker has been added to the planting area to further enhance a sense of place.
