This inner city light industrial hub was proposed for a total refurbishment. The proposal included mixed retail, light industrial and residential development. The site itself presented a number of challenges. Umbaco was engaged to resolve the overall site access and provide comforting and functional community spaces throughout the landscape. A generous open space allowed for large community gatherings or market, with surrounding terraced seating. A more formal smaller secluded area could be used for smaller gatherings or lunches with a small shelter. The lawns were to be used as a detention basin. The spatial arrangement and existing site levels could accommodate a number of lovely terraced courtyards shaded by pergolas. The site history would be reflected in the materials, such as recycled brick paving and recycled wharf timber, and appropriate public art. Extensive roof gardens completed our concepts.
